What is a Geocoin?
Geocoins are made for outdoor treasure hunters that would like to stash a custom-designed geocoin in a secret cache or would like to find a trackable geocoin.
Geocoins are found using a hand-held GPS or Smart phone to find a geocache containing a geocoin a cacher has left for you to log and move if you so choose.
For millennia, explorers have been searching for treasure, forging paths and traveling across the globe from treacherous peaks to the deepest reaches of the oceans. Today’s treasure seekers have reinvented the pursuit as the perfect hobby for the tech-savvy outdoor enthusiast— geocaching. The geocachers mantra “If you hide, they will come” has inspired hundreds of thousands of people to participate in this global treasure hunt. Geocaching is fun involves one or a group of friends, a hand-held GPS, and some hiking shoes.
How do Geocoins work?
Because each Geocoin is assigned a unique tracking number, its progress can be tracked online through logs posted by the finders. There are different types of logs that can be made on a Geocoin’s personal home page, including picking up or dropping off the coin, and “discovering” the coin. When you log, you’ll have the opportunity to share your thoughts on the Geocoin page and to upload any photos associated with it. In addition, by logging a Geocoin your online collection will reflect that you found that particular coin. Please note some Geocoins are non trackable.
